Every thing I have done seems to me blank and suspicious.—I doubt whether my greatest thoughts, as I supposed them, are not shallow—and people will most likely laugh at me.—My pride is impotent, my love gets no response.—the complacency of nature is hateful—I am filled with restlessness.—I am incomplete.—
—Whitman, discouraged by the reception to the 1st edition of Leaves of Grass
Man, Walt, you’re breaking my heart here…
Pattern: Ice Flowers
“These peculiar natural phenomena are formed on new layers of sea ice from saturated water vapors that come up from under the ice through cracks. In contact with the cold air, the vapors start to freeze and the salt on the surface of the ice begins to crystallize, serving as a base for the sublimated water to build off of. The ‘petals’ of ice flowers are very delicate and will come off when touched. They usually form in sunlight and typically are visible in the early mornings or in shaded areas.”
Hamsters Reunited After Long-Distance Relationship
Chloe and Steve have been dating for nearly 10 months, but most of that time was spent apart. The hamsters met through the online matchmaking site OKhammy.com, and while they have connected in person, their careers took them to different parts of the country.
“It was really tough on them for a while,” says Gabe Fisher, a close friend of Steve. “They’d email and Skype every day, but it was always a little sad.”
Fortunately, Chloe was able to get a transfer within her company. The happy couple now share a one-bedroom cage.
“Steve said they might buy an exercise wheel together,” says Fisher. “It sounds like they’re really getting serious.”
